The AlpWeek 2022 from 5 to 7 September 2022 in Brig-Glis/CH will bring together citizens and decision-makers to discuss the many aspects of transformation in the Alps. With sadness we communicate that on 10 November 2021 the German commons activist Silke Helfrich has died in a tragic mountain accident in Liechtenstein. The 54-years old acclaimed author, sociologist and pedagogue had been in Schaan (LI) to contribute with her outstanding expertise on fair and just economies to the development of CIPRA International.

Tourism has brought wealth to the Alps. In many regions it remains an important source of income, but lack of economic diversification is also a risk. The importance and orientation of tourism differs strongly among Alpine countries, but all of them need new strategies and approaches to cope with shifts in visitor behaviour and climate change. A socio-economic transformation is needed that takes account of tourism’s past, present and future potential.
